Hockey Week’s Back Yard Rink Contest
There’s nothing quite like the thrill of playing ice hockey on a rink built in the great outdoors.
Whether it be on a frozen pond, a glaciated driveway or a rink made in your own back yard, playing hockey outside in the elements takes a person back to the essence of the game.
That’s why now is the time to get that outdoor rink built, because the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame hosts an annual Back Yard Rink Contest as part of Hockey Week In Fairbanks.
“It’s one of my favorite things about Hockey Week, because it involves the entire family and the kids are so excited,” said Randy Zarnke, president of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame. “The enthusiasm is infectious and I get excited too.”
Hockey Week In Fairbanks begins on February 26 and runs through March 6. The Back Yard Rink Contest judging takes place from Feb. 29 through March 2 and the winner will likely be named on March 3.
Zarnke said there are usually about a half-dozen back yard rinks entered in the contest and some years there’s been as many as 10 or more. That can make it hard on the judges to pick just one winner.
“There are no hard and fast rules on the judging,” Zarnke said. “One of the most important things to me is seeing how many kids use it to have fun and learn the game.”
The 2015 contest was won by the Gene Sager family, who live in Hamilton Acres. “We always have a great time with our rink,” Sager said recently. “All of our friends and neighbors bring their kids over to skate. It’s a lot of work, but well worth the effort. I encourage everyone with kids to put a rink in their yard. Good luck to those families who enter the contest this year.”
Zarnke hopes that scheduling Hockey Week In Fairbanks later than normal, more families will want to put their rinks on display.
To enter your backyard rink the contest, contact Zarnke at 452-6857 or send him an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“It isn’t always the big fancy rink with boards and lights that wins,” Zarnke said. “The small ones that get a lot of use are always my favorites.”
Holaday-Parks sponsors the winning prize, a trophy featuring the silhouette of the annual Hockey Week In Fairbanks logo.
“It’s a fantastic piece of art the winners will have to keep as a memory forever, whether they place it on their mantel or somewhere out by their back yard rink,” Zarnke said.
Hockey Week In Fairbanks is a production of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame in conjunction with various hockey groups in the Interior.
The event is sponsored by Emerald Isle Pull Tabs and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department.
